Babies Were Born to Be Breastfed

Now is the time to think about how you will feed your baby. It is important to make an informed choice. The choice you make will have lifelong and profound health effects on you and your baby.

Breastfeeding is a natural act. It is also something you learn to do. Almost all mothers can breastfeed if they have good information and support from family, friends, doctors, and nurses.

Why Breastfeed Your Baby?

Breastmilk is the perfect food for your baby. It has special nutrients your baby needs that are not found in formula. Breastmilk is the only food your baby needs during the first six months of their life. It helps build a special bond with your child and helps you get back to your pre-pregnancy weight more quickly. You save time, energy and money by breastfeeding. There are no bottles to wash and no formula to prepare. Breastfeeding is free. Formula is expensive. By choosing to breastfeed, you will save your family over $1,000 in the first 6 months of your baby’s life.

Plan to Return to Work?

You can still give your baby the benefits of breastfeeding even if you have to go back to work. During your pregnancy develop a plan with your employer that allows you some flexibility in your work schedule so that you have time to express your breastmilk.

Breastmilk is usually expressed with a breast pump. There are many pumps to choose from and you may need to try several before you find the right one for you. A lactation consultant, La Leche League Leader, or WIC counselor may be able to help you.

  • There are some free and low-cost breast pump services available in Washington State. To find out what is available in your area call the Family Health Hotline at 1-800-322-2588.
