Give your baby the best start possible—breastfeed.

a new baby breastfeeding

Breastmilk is the perfect food for your baby. It has special nutrients your baby needs that are not found in formula. Your breastmilk changes to meet the needs of your growing child. Breastmilk is the only food your baby needs during the first six months of their life.

Why breastfeed your baby?

Breastfeeding helps you and your baby stay healthy. It also helps you build a special bond with your child and get back to your pre-pregnancy weight more quickly. You save time, energy and money by breastfeeding. There are no bottles to wash and no formula to prepare. Breastfeeding is free. Formula is expensive. By choosing to breastfeed, you will save your family over $1,000 in the first 6 months of your baby’s life.

Do you plan to return to work?

You can still give your baby the benefits of breastfeeding even if you have to go back to work. During your pregnancy develop a plan with your employer that allows you some flexibility in your work schedule so that you have time to express your breastmilk.

Breastmilk is usually expressed with a breast pump. There are many pumps to choose from and you may need to try several before you find the right one for you. A lactation consultant, La Leche League Leader, or WIC counselor may be able to help you.

The “Working & Breastfeeding: It’s Worth It!” packet will help you to develop a plan for returning to work. This is a free packet of information to help you continue to breastfeed. The packet includes information for you and your employer. Learn about suggestions for finding supportive daycare, tips for transitioning back to work, support services, and information for employers about why and how employers can support their breastfeeding employees.
