Health Insurance for Your Family

It is important to have regular medical care for your children and for yourself. Washington State provides free and low cost health insurance to low-income children and families.
For Children
Washington State provides free and low-cost health insurance for eligible children. Your child will receive medical, dental, vision and mental health benefits through the program. The program is available for both citizen and non-citizen children.

For Families
You and your children may qualify for the Basic Health. Basic Health is a program that helps eligible Washington State residents purchase low cost health insurance. It covers doctor and hospital care, emergency services and prescription drugs. It does not cover dental or vision services.
Don’t Qualify for the Programs Above?
There are a couple of other options available.
Community Clinics:
- If your family does not qualify for either of the state insurance programs above, there are community clinics that offer medical care at a reduced cost to you, called a sliding scale fee. A sliding scale fee is a cost that is determined by your income. For example, if you have a very small income you will be asked to pay less for a service than someone who has a larger income. These clinics provide good care, even though the amount you pay may be less.
- To find a community clinic near you call the Family Health Hotline at 1-800-322-2588.
Private Insurance:
- It is also possible to purchase a private health insurance plan for your child or yourself.
- To learn more about private health insurance call the Washington State Insurance Commissioner at 1-800-562-6900.
